The BBC has confirmed plans to shrink its output, in order to save money and allow competition from commercial rivals. As part of this, digital radio station 6Music will be shut down at the end of 2011.

Anyone who has listened to 6music for more than five minutes will know that its programmes and music are nothing like that broadcast by any other BBC or commercial station. No commercial station would have any interest in playing the sort of music that 6music does; 6music fulfills the BBC's charter much more closely than either Radio 1 or Radio 2 do.

What can you do?

Important! Fill out this survey for the BBC Strategic Review

Make a complaint to the BBC. Let the BBC know that you listen to 6Music and that shutting the station down would be doing a disservice to the listeners of the UK.

Contact your MP. Tell your MP that you, as a taxpayer, listen to BBC 6Music and tell them why the station should be kept running. Be polite. Note that written correspondence will be taken more seriously than email. Ask them questions in your letter, to ensure that you get a reply; ask very specific questions so that you don't simply get a form letter from their staffers.

Sign the online petition. But be mindful that writing to the BBC and your local MPs will be much more effective.
